Never in a Million Years…

So I’m a little late posting this one but I still think that this ad should be recognized for how great it is.  If you’re not a sports fan you may not find it as funny or well done as I think it is but it is still a great advertisement for this product. Hopefully you’ve seen it by now, but if not here it is:

I know. It’s amazing. The TV spot was created by Deutsch Inc. agency in Los Angeles as a promotional piece for the release of the video game MLB The Show 12. And boy did they do a great job.

For those of you who are lost, let me explain (sorry Cubs fans). The Chicago Cubs baseball team has not won the World Series (the championship in Major League Baseball) in 103 YEARS. That’s the longest title drought of any professional sports team in North America. Many blame it on “the curse”, others on the players, and still others on the management but yet even as the cubs continue to struggle, they still have an extremely faithful fan base.

And that’s what makes this commercial so incredibly well done. Imagining the pandemonium that would ensue if the Cubs did win the title perks interest and leads a person watching to think, “Oh yeah right, like the Cubs will EVER win the World Series. Not in a million years.” It is such an unthinkable situation that even on a TV commercial it can’t be taken seriously. And the slogan of “So Real, Its Unreal” plays well into this idea of the absurdity of a Cubs championship.

But yet when it is put in the context of someone playing a video game and becoming emotional at the thought of the team winning completely turns the ad around and invokes a chuckle and smile at the disposition of this odd little scene.

I really love this ad and I applaud the creative team at Deutsch Inc. for their awesome work.
